The deal, in plain words.

1 · Who this is between

You, and the people who made it.

"We" and "us" means [NAME OF THE PERSON OR ENTITY RESPONSIBLE], contactable at [CONTACT EMAIL]. "The app" means No Look Typing at nolooktyping.com, including the typing app at /play/, and "you" means whoever is using it.

Using the app means these terms apply. If you do not want them to, do not use it — nothing has been taken from you, since there is nothing to pay and nothing to sign up for.

2 · Money

There is none.

The app is free to use. It contains no adverts, no in-app purchases, no subscription, no trial that turns into a bill and no payment processing of any kind. Nobody is asked for card details anywhere, and any page that does ask is not ours.

If a paid version ever exists, it will be a separate, clearly-marked thing, and this page will change before it does. What is free today does not become billable retrospectively.

3 · Age

Children use this. That is the point.

The app was built for a 13-year-old and children are among its intended users. It works completely with no account and, used that way, sends nothing anywhere.

A parent or guardian can see everything held about their child and have it erased at any time, from the app or by writing to [CONTACT EMAIL]. If you would rather nothing ever left the device, simply do not make an account; that is the default.

4 · Accounts

A username, a password, and a code you have to keep.

• A username is 3 to 16 characters — letters, numbers, - and _. Nothing requires it to be your real name, and we would rather it were not.
• Passwords must be at least six characters. Choose something nobody else would guess, and do not reuse a password that matters elsewhere.
• At sign-up you are shown a recovery code, once. Write it down. We hold no email address, so if you lose both your password and that code, we cannot get your account back for you and nobody can. That is not a policy we can make an exception to; the code is stored only as a hash and the account file genuinely cannot be opened without one of the two.
• You are responsible for what happens under your account. Do not share the password or the recovery code.
• Changing your password signs every device out.

One account holds one player's progress. On a shared computer, each person should use their own player in the app, and only one of them should be signed in at a time — the app will tell you if the signed-in account and the selected player have drifted apart, and it stops syncing rather than mixing two children's records together.

5 · Fair use

What you agree not to do.

• Do not try to get into anyone else's account, guess passwords, or interfere with the sign-in protections.
• Do not attack, flood, scrape or overload the server, or try to make it unavailable to other people. It is one small machine paid for by one family.
• Do not use an automated tool to fake typing results. It cheats only you, and the app already refuses results it can tell were not typed by hands.
• Do not paste other people's personal information into the "your own text" box, the interests box or your player name. It is for homework and practice sentences. If you sign in, whatever is in those boxes is uploaded as part of your progress.
• Do not use the app to store or transmit anything unlawful.
• Do not pass off the app, or a copy of it, as your own.

Progress codes are pasteable text, so a code can come from anywhere. The app treats every pasted code as untrusted and forces it back into the expected shape, but a code from a stranger is still a stranger's data: only paste your own.

6 · Your text

What you type is yours, and we do not read it.

Anything you type or paste into the app — your own practice text, your interests, your name, and every keystroke you make — belongs to you. We claim no rights over it.

If you use an account, your progress is stored on our server as an opaque blob so it can be handed back to you on another computer. It is not read, not analysed, not mined, not used to train anything, and not shown to anyone else. There is no model in this product and no analytics pipeline for it to feed.

7 · The app itself

The code, the words and the name.

The app, its text, its design and the name "No Look Typing" belong to [NAME OF THE PERSON OR ENTITY RESPONSIBLE]. You may use the app for yourself, your family or your classroom. You may not sell it, rebrand it, or host a copy of it as though it were yours.

8 · The measurements

What the numbers are, and what they are not.

The app measures your typing and tells you what it found. Those measurements are honest but they are measurements of typing, nothing more. Specifically:

• Your No Look Score is a comparison of your speed with the keyboard visible against your speed with it hidden, capped at 100%. It needs two real rounds; if either is too short or impossibly fast, the app says the attempt did not count rather than printing a confident number.
• "What it is costing you" on the home page is arithmetic on stated assumptions — 2,000 keystrokes a day and 250 working days a year. It is an illustration of a rate, not a prediction about your life.
• The coach's advice is generated from your own keystrokes by rules written into the app. It is a typing tutor's opinion, not a diagnosis. It is not educational assessment, medical, occupational-health or ergonomic advice.
• Speeds above 200 words a minute are ignored and never set a record, because a human did not type them.

If your hands or wrists hurt when you type, stop and ask a doctor. This app is not qualified to have an opinion about that and does not offer one.

9 · Losing your progress

This is the real risk, so it gets its own section.

Two things protect you, and both need you to act:

• The progress code in Settings — copy it somewhere safe. The app offers it to you once you have something worth losing.
• An account, which keeps a backup on the server and merges it with whatever is on the machine you sign in on. It never overwrites one copy with the other.

We take reasonable care of the account backups, but we do not guarantee them. Keep a progress code as well if the record matters to you.

10 · Availability

One server, two people, no promises.

The app is served from a single machine and maintained by a father and a teenager in their spare time. It may be slow, it may be down, and it may change without notice. If the accounts server is unreachable, the app keeps working offline and syncs later — that is deliberate.

If we ever shut the service down, we will say so on this site first and leave time for people to take their progress with them. What happens to the stored accounts in that case is written into the retention policy.

11 · The legal bit

Provided as it is.

The app is provided free and as it is, with no warranty of any kind. We do not promise it will be available, accurate, uninterrupted, error-free, or fit for any particular purpose, including any educational purpose.

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for lost progress, lost time, lost data, or any indirect or consequential loss arising from using the app. Some of these limits do not apply everywhere, and nothing here is intended to exclude any liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.

12 · Ending it

You can stop at any time, and so can we.

You can stop using the app whenever you like. Deleting your account is a button in Settings; clearing site data removes the local copy. Neither needs to be asked for and neither needs a reason.

We can suspend or delete an account that is being used to attack the service or other people's accounts. Apart from that, an account is deleted only by its owner, or automatically after long disuse on the published retention schedule.

13 · Law and changes

Which law, and what happens when this page changes.

If these terms change, the date at the top changes. A change that genuinely affects you — anything about money, or anything about what leaves your computer — will be said on screen in the app, not left on a page nobody opens.
